East is East (1996)

by Ayub Khan Din

Salford 1970: The Khan children, caught between bell-bottoms and arranged marriages, are buffeted this way and that way by their Pakistani father’s insistence on tradition and being good muslims, their English mother’s laissez-faire and their own desire to be citizens of the world.

The critically acclaimed East is East marked a defining moment in Tamasha’s history and is now a contemporary classic. It became a popular film and the play has had many new national and international productions.

The original production was co-produced with The Royal Court and in association with Birmingham Rep. The Rep also produced the 25th anniversary revival in 2021 (with the National Theatre)
